Volga-Dnepr Group (sort of) Orders 20 747-8Fs

Hot off the presses, Volga-Dnepr Group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to take 20 747-8Fs over the next seven years. Part of this deal includes logistic support from Volga's Antonov-124-100 fleet, which is often seen delivering fuselages and other things to Paine Field. The reason I say "sort of" is because an MOU is just the first step in a long process of getting orders firmed up.

Read about it here.

This is about three 747s a year through 2022. If Boeing can sign a few more airlines, like Cargolux, to similar deals, they very well could keep the 747 line churning at twelve or so frames a year into the 2020s. Exciting news.

  1. This is great news - at 1.3 a month this represents 15 months worth of production, or more if they drop the rate further to 1 a month.

I wonder if this order will soak up the 4 ex-Asiana whitetails? And what is the story with LN1437? Will Saudi Cargo still take it, or is that a potential fifth whitetail that could be included in the Volga-Dnepr mix?

On the passenger side, do you know what the story is with the Korean frames (LN1506 and LN1509). They've been out, unpainted, for 11 and 9 months and haven't flown yet according to your spreadsheet. Is there an issue with them, or with the customer?

    1. First two questions are still unclear. For the Korean Airline frames, they'll probably button them up over the next couple of months. Korean is planning on flying them to Frankfurt in September, so they'll probably install engines and paint them in July or August.

  2. LN1521 RC674 will be Silk Way frame.

  3. One of the Korean frames has engines and either is in paint or is about to go into paint I believe.

As for the Atlas NTU, the Unidentified order from June 4th could be Saudia taking it up. I originally suspected ABC, but that seems less likely after today's announcement, unless it turns out to be part of the order for 20.

That leaves 3 Asiana NTUs to place still. I'm sure they could go to ABC if needed on a quicker schedule.
